Searching for high school is an exciting time for our students! Parents and guardians are provided with infomation about upcoming events and reminders of important admissions dates from the Archdiocese of New Orleans.
Preparing for High School
In fifth grade, students begin to establish their experiences and responsibilities as Middle School learners. Students have lockers for the first time at Holy Name. There are three teachers who teach two core subjects each. The students rotate between the teachers to become more familiar with these Middle School traditions, thus supporting their transition to high school two years later. Fifth grade students are encouraged to attend high school Open Houses or to visit high school websites to be more familiar with the many choices in the Archdiocese of New Orleans.
Our sixth grade students experience a “right of passage” down the third floor hallway for their final two years at Holy Name. Here, students may experience having a different teacher for each core subject. Students are encouraged to attend high school Open Houses and to begin visiting various high schools through “spend a day” programs. Sixth grade students become advocates of their own learning and develop more collaborative skills with teachers and students.
The seventh graders celebrate many important traditions as the enthusiastic leaders of Holy Name. Early in the academic year, a seventh grade meeting is hosted for parents/guardians and students to discuss the high school application process and the annual class trip.
Before Open Houses commence, Holy Name organizes a High School Information Day for our seventh grade students on campus. The Catholic high schools are invited to participate and present their school to our students. Our seventh graders have an opportunity to discuss high school options with school admissions directors, current high school students (which are often Holy Name alumni), and other high school administrators.
Flourish Prep was created out of a desire for seventh graders to be even more prepared for the Catholic high school placement test. High School placement test prep gives seventh graders the opportunity to not only work on a test strategy, but also to practice sample test questions with a professional educator. Skills from the class include quantitative math, logical reasoning, reading comprehension, problem solving, and standardized test taking strategies. Please visit www.flourishprep.com to find out specific information about the course.
Between the reassuring team of the Middle School teachers and the administrative staff, our students and parents are knowledgeable and supported throughout this key process and decision.
