Holy Name’s Art Program encourages students to explore various artistic mediums while developing their unique voices as artists. Students learn to manipulate different materials, such as paint, clay, and textiles, which enhances their understanding of texture, color, and form. Through hands-on projects, students engage with the fundamental elements of design—line, shape, space, color, and texture—allowing them to experiment and make informed choices in their artwork. This approach not only fosters creativity and personal expression but also builds confidence as students see their ideas come to life. By integrating these core concepts, the program aims to cultivate an appreciation for art and empower students to communicate their thoughts and feelings visually.
In Kindergarten through 2nd Grade, art plays a vital role in the development of young children's creativity and fine motor skills. These programs introduce students to essential tools such as glue and scissors, allowing them to learn how to manipulate and combine different materials to create unique projects. By safely using scissors, children practice hand-eye coordination and precision, while glue helps them understand the concept of assembling and layering. Additionally, material experimentation is encouraged through the use of markers and paint, where students can explore colors, textures, and techniques. This hands-on experience not only fosters artistic expression but also builds confidence as children see their ideas come to life on paper and other surfaces. Overall we strive to provide a foundational experience that nurtures creativity and critical thinking in young learners.
In 3rd and 4th grade Art classes, students engage in a vibrant journey of self-expression and material mastery through various artistic mediums like paints, clay, pastels, and markers. These explorations encourage children to explore their unique voices while developing essential skills in handling different materials. Through hands-on projects, students learn not only to create, but also to appreciate the nuances of texture, color, and form. In 4th grade, students start cross-curricular projects with other school departments like music, theatre, and science. In one such joint project, the theatre class learns about Greek Tragedies, writing and performing their own original play; while in the art room, students engage in hands-on learning by sculpting their own masks, a vital element of Greek theatre that allows actors to portray different characters and emotions.
The Art Program for 5th to 7th graders is designed to encourage self-expression while mastering various artistic mediums. Students will explore the vibrant world of acrylic paint, learning how to mix shades and hues to create dynamic artworks. They also work with kiln-fired clay, where they can sculpt and design figure drawing and advanced shading techniques, all while grasping essential concepts like two-point perspective. This comprehensive program not only enhances artistic skills but also fosters creativity and individuality in young artists.
Middle schoolers have the opportunity to participate in our elective program. The art room offers electives from sketching, to sculpting, to 3D printing where we delve into the innovative world of digital creation to bring their imaginative ideas to life. Additionally, we offer linoleum block and screen printing, allowing students to experiment with print-making techniques and create one-of-a-kind apparel all their own.
